PARENT EDUCATION EVENT: “Understanding Gender: Supporting Healthy Development at Home and in School:” Wednesday, March 15, at 6:30pm, Cornell Elementary School Multi-Purpose Room. Ever walked down the store aisles and noticed the difference between “boy” and “girl” toys or Halloween costumes? Our children are surrounded by messages about gender from a young age. What signals do they get about who can do what, wear what, and why? How does that affect self-esteem and academic performance? And how do we create schools that are safe and welcoming for all genders? Join Rick Oculto of Welcoming Schools to learn about gender development, examine transgender and non-binary issues, and find ways to recognize and address our own assumptions about gender. Brook Pessin-Whedbee, author of Who Are You? The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity, will discuss her groundbreaking new children’s book with parents, and give a reading in childcare.
