PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Hello Otters,

WE NEED YOU!!!!  We are all looking forward to this year’s OV Fall Festival on Saturday, 10/25.  There will be games, prizes and a walk-thon.  But we can’t make this event a success without you.  Parents, please use OV Parent Sign-up Link to volunteer your time and make this a successful event.

This week, TK-3rd graders were visited by our local firefighters, they gave a presentation on fire safety. Our students had great questions for the fire fighters and now you can rest assured your student is better prepared for an emergency situation. If you are interested, the Albany Fire Station will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, 10/11 from 8-12pm. If you would like to meet our local heroes, see the flyer below for details.

This week, our 4th-5th Grade students were visited by author Aimee Lucido, for her new book “Words Apart”. Thank you to Ms. Michelle, our librarian, for hosting her. It was a special treat for our students to meet a real life author!

Our first Albany Math Vision Team meeting was Weds 10/8 where we dug into our shared values, reflected on experiences with math as learners and teachers, and began to build trust as a cross-site team. Check out our agenda & slide deck here if you’re curious to know more.

Reminder: No School on Monday, 10/13,  for Indigenous Peoples Day.

AUSD COMMUNITY

URGENT—CANCELLED!!! Progress Pride Flag Chalking Party Is Cancelled

Unfortunately, due to a forecast for potentially heavy rainfall early next week, we will be postponing the Albany's Pride Chalk Party that was scheduled for Monday, October 13, 3:30pm.  We hope to plan another event to spread some rainbow cheer soon. Albany's Pride, an LGBTQIA+ advocacy and engagement group for Albany Unified School District, is committed to ensuring that the sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression of all members of our AUSD community are valued, respected, and celebrated. We need more volunteers to step up as leaders to ensure our group can continue thriving. Email albanyspride@gmail.com for more or visit https://albanyspride.org/

Please join us for the next meeting of the Albany Disability Squad's Family Support Group* Wednesday, October 15, 7–8 pm and the third Wednesday of upcoming months. So much of our time, energy and heart goes toward supporting our kid(s)! It can be rewarding but also exhausting, overwhelming, and lonely. Parent Education Night—Social Media and Kids

Please join AMS PTA for our first Parent Education Night of the year on Thursday, October 16, 7-8 pm in the Albany Middle School Library! Teacher and UC Berkeley Ph.D. Candidate Meg Everett, will be presenting "What the Research Really Says: Understanding Social Media's Impact on Kids and Supporting Healthy Digital Habits." Drawing from current research on social media, schools, and child development, Meg will help parents navigate the ongoing debates about how kids spend their time online, explore what it means to grow up in an increasingly digital world, and share evidence-based strategies for supporting young people in creating healthy boundaries with digital devices. She'll conclude with practical guidance on how families and schools can work together to develop supportive phone policies.
