WELCOME BACK Principal Georgeson's Letter to Families

  WD

August 2019

Dear Ocean View Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year. I hope you and your family have enjoyed the summer.  The Ocean View teachers, staff and I wish to welcome you and your family to another school year.  This year marks the start of our move into temporary housing while our school begins to be rebuilt. Starting this fall our kindergarten students will be attending school at either Cornell or Marin schools. The communities at both schools are excited to bring our littlest ones into their communities. Our Ocean View 1st and 2nd grades will attend school starting this fall at the Middle School Annex across the street from Albany Middle School at 601 San Gabriel. Our Ocean View 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will begin the year on the Ocean View campus.  Upon completion of the new High School wing, set to be ready by January, we plan to move during the week of our Mid-winter Break, February 17 -21, 2020. At that time, after we move the Ocean View campus, it will begin its transformation, starting with demolition in the spring of 2020. This construction is currently projected to take approximately 2 years.

CONSTRUCTION: As you may recall from last year, AUSD has some significant construction plans in progress. Here is a brief recap: Due to seismic deficiencies, Ocean View and Marin need to be rebuilt.  There are no plans for construction at Cornell since this site was not found to be seismically deficient. Once the new Ocean View facility is built, all Marin classes will be relocated offsite and construction will begin at Marin.  This is currently projected to happen in fall, 2021.

DISTRICT: With construction in full swing, and several new district office and school staff, there is much change in the wind in Albany.  That said, we can still identify some things that remain constant. As we begin another school year, I want to reaffirm our commitment to making Ocean View School a safe place for all students.   We want to continue our work on building empathy, practicing kindness, and learning about racial, disability and LGBT differences. We recognize that experiencing and being exposed to a broad range of diversity provides us all with an opportunity to expand our ability to understand, support, and celebrate one another.   It helps us to learn about perspectives that we may not otherwise be exposed to, which ultimately helps us to be even better global citizens.

OCEAN VIEW ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT:  Because Ocean View School will be at two locations during our time in temporary housing and throughout the construction of our new school we are lucky enough to get additional administrative support.  Please welcome Elizabeth  (Liz) Reimuller to our Ocean View Community. Liz has worked in Albany Schools for 23 years and we are fortunate to have her with us. Her past experience as an elementary 3rd and 4th grade teacher, a teacher-coach and Albany High Assistant Principal will serve our community well. She and I will coordinate our time to make sure each school site has one of us on campus each day. For the first month of school, Ms. Reimuller will become familiar with our Ocean View campus on Jackson Street while I will be located much of this month at our 1st and 2nd grade Annex location on San Gabriel Street near the middle school. I invite you to welcome Ms. Reimuller to our community when you have an opportunity.
