Dear Albany Community,
It’s been hot out there, but Albany schools have all done well this week to keep students comfortable while learning. The unusual heat made me think about the timeliness of Measure L, the school bond placed on the November ballot by the AUSD Board of Education. The district is in a situation where previous bonds are getting paid off and we have the opportunity to remain at the same tax rate, but raise significant additional funding, by “filling the gap.”
The important thing, to me, is what Measure L would do for Albany schools. Although the aging HVAC systems at the middle school and high school held up this week, these systems are near the end of their mechanical life span and will need to be replaced before long. Bathrooms and locker rooms need to be modernized, the AHS Fine Arts Building is inadequate, and temporary buildings at several campuses are at, or past, their usable life. Capital projects take years of lead time for planning, design, and state approval. Albany Unified is looking to the future so that thoughtful processes can begin on these critical projects. Rather than reacting to breakdowns or other types of emergencies, the school board has acted to keep Albany students in functional, well-maintained buildings into the future.
Classroom Visits
Last week I mentioned that I have been visiting classrooms. It is always a joy to see educators working with students, but my responsibility goes further than that. When I visit schools, I look at how well our District initiatives are being implemented at each site. I look for how instruction is being delivered in classrooms.
This summer, district administrators met in a retreat. The question posed to administrators was, “How are we holding ourselves accountable for student learning? What does equity look like for students not meeting academic expectations and for students exceeding academic expectations? I will continue to focus administrators’ attention on this key question throughout the year.
International Walk & Roll To School Day
Next Wednesday, October 9, is International Walk & Roll To School Day. One of the special things about Albany is that it is possible for many students to use “active transportation”, that is, modes of transportation that are human-powered, to get to school. Active transportation is good for students as it provides them with healthy exercise, and it is a great transition from the home environment into the school day. It’s good for the environment and it helps reduce car traffic around the schools. If you/your student are able, please consider walking or rolling to school on October 9. Some schools will be tallying results to see all of the different modes of transportation their students have used to get to school.

Bono escolar de la Medida L, visitas a las aulas, día de ir a la escuela caminando o en bicicleta
Estimada comunidad de Albany:
Ha hecho calor, pero las escuelas de Albany han hecho un buen trabajo esta semana para mantener a los estudiantes cómodos mientras aprenden. El calor inusual me hizo pensar en la oportunidad de la Medida L , el bono escolar colocado en la boleta de noviembre por la Junta de Educación de AUSD. El distrito está en una situación en la que los bonos anteriores se están pagando y tenemos la oportunidad de permanecer con la misma tasa impositiva, pero recaudar fondos adicionales significativos, al "llenar el vacío".
Lo importante, para mí, es lo que la Medida L haría por las escuelas de Albany. Aunque los viejos sistemas de calefacción, ventilación y aire acondicionado de la escuela secundaria y la preparatoria se mantuvieron en funcionamiento esta semana, estos sistemas están llegando al final de su vida útil mecánica y necesitarán ser reemplazados en poco tiempo. Los baños y los vestuarios necesitan ser modernizados, el edificio de Bellas Artes de AHS es inadecuado y los edificios temporales en varios campus ya han alcanzado o superado su vida útil. Los proyectos de capital requieren años de planificación, diseño y aprobación estatal. La pregunta que se les planteó fue: “ ¿Cómo nos hacemos responsables del aprendizaje de los estudiantes? ¿Cómo se ve la equidad para los estudiantes que no cumplen con las expectativas académicas y para los estudiantes que las superan?”. Continuaré centrando la atención de los administradores en esta pregunta clave durante todo el año.
Día Internacional de Caminar y Ir en Bicicleta a la Escuela
El próximo miércoles 9 de octubre es el Día Internacional de Caminar o Ir en Bicicleta a la Escuela. Una de las cosas especiales de Albany es que muchos estudiantes pueden usar el "transporte activo", es decir, los medios de transporte que son impulsados por humanos, para llegar a la escuela. El transporte activo es bueno para los estudiantes, ya que les proporciona ejercicio saludable y es una gran transición del entorno doméstico a la jornada escolar. Es bueno para el medio ambiente y ayuda a reducir el tráfico vehicular alrededor de las escuelas. Si usted o su estudiante pueden, considere caminar o ir en bicicleta a la escuela el 9 de octubre. 國際步行上學日
