Dear Albany Community,
On Wednesday, I proudly watched our students, and even a Board of Education Trustee (Melissa Boyd, Esq.), perform for the Black History Month Celebration. It was simply amazing. Over 300 people attended in person, and Ocean View contributed a heartwarming video of an all-school performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing, often referred to as the Black National Anthem. See the photo above of the students, assembled in a heart shape on the playground, performing their song. This event demonstrated a caring, loving, and inclusive community. Every culture in our community was represented at this celebration.
March Is Women's Herstory Month
We celebrate several different honorary months in Albany, and if you ask me why, I would tell you that we need these reminders to help us create change. My mother was a single parent, and I grew up surrounded by sisters. I have had ample opportunity to see that women do not enjoy equal status in our society and still have a long way to go to reach that goal. The field of education, including Albany schools, are filled with remarkable women who do heroic work on a daily basis. Take a moment to read the Women’s Herstory Month Resolution passed by our Board of Education and get ready to elevate women this month!
Last Chance To Vote!
Next Tuesday, March 5, 2024 is the Presidential Primary Election. AUSD has an item on the ballot, Measure G. I hope that you have read about it and voted, if not, please plan on voting this weekend with your vote-by-mail ballot, or at the polls on Tuesday. Surprisingly, Albany schools are funded far below the state average of $18,793/per attending student. We receive only $15,681, due to a combination of factors. AUSD is facing a $2.9 million dollar deficit, which could mean significant cuts. Please take a look at the factual information on our website: Local Funding Measure G, Measure G FAQ, and the Budget News Corner for a summary of all recent budget-related information. Albany High School Debaters Win
Congratulations to two Albany High students, Leela Hensler and Sam Rothstein, for winning first place in the Varsity Parliamentary Debate at Stanford Invitational! They also both won speaker awards—one student got first place and the other got fourth place. The Stanford Invitational is a major debate event and we are so proud of these students!
Familias Latinas Hosts Game Night!
Familias Latinas will be hosting a Game Night tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, March 2 with games for the whole family to play, including board games, card games, video games, and virtual reality games. Rounds of loteria throughout the event will be held so that people can win prizes while supporting our scholarship fund. All are welcome, get ready to play!
