Dear Albany Community,
Today is the 100th day of the school year, and cause for celebration. Young students throughout the district have engaged in lessons to give them a sense of how much a hundred really is. But not all the lessons are mathematical—many Kindergarten and first grade classes took a moment to reflect on their life goals and write them out. See the examples shown above of a few things some of our students want to accomplish before they reach 100 years of age. Maybe I should be eating more ice cream…
Black History Month
At the Board of Education meeting this Tuesday, the student representative to the Black Parent Advisory Group, Ife Fane, read Resolution 2023-24-09, Proclaiming February as Black History Month. The Black Parent Advisory Group is honored this year to celebrate the contributions of African Americans in visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary arts, and other forms of cultural expression. At the Black History Month Celebration on February 28 (details below), Albany students will come together to demonstrate these influences and contributions through music, dance, poetry, and spoken word. All are welcome, please put this on your calendar.
Accountable Book Talk
On Wednesday, Accountable author Dashka Slater spoke to a full house in the Albany High School Little Theater as part of the Albany Library’s Albany Reads event series. Although her book focuses solely on the actions and life-shattering aftermath of a racist Instagram account that rocked Albany High in 2017, Ms. Slater reflected on the appalling frequency of such events across the nation. Information About AUSD’s Deficit
I have devoted a lot of space in these January Updates to the District’s financial situation because I want everyone to be fully informed as we approach the March 5 election. It’s been difficult because there are so many wonderful things happening at our schools you should know about, such as the Kindness Week projects and the magnificent Spotlight on Cornell presented by the Cornell Student Council! However, to maintain Albany’s excellence so that I can focus on all the good news, we need to spend some time now on the details.
A presentation, also from Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, answers many of the questions I have received. It helps explain how the Governor’s proposed budget will not cover AUSD’s increased expenses over the next several years. It documents the magnitude of the deficit that we must address. Measure G is on the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Ballot. For more information about the election or to register to vote, please visit www.acvote.org. All registered voters in Albany will be receiving mail-in ballots for the election in early February.

Mes negro de la historia
En la reunión de la Junta de Educación de este martes, el representante estudiantil ante el Grupo Asesor de Padres Negros, Ife Fane, leyó la Resolución 2023-24-09, que proclama febrero como el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana . El Grupo Asesor de Padres Negros tiene el honor este año de celebrar las contribuciones de los afroamericanos en las artes visuales y escénicas, la literatura, la moda, el folclore, el idioma, el cine, la música, la arquitectura, las artes culinarias y otras formas de expresión cultural.
