Dear Albany Community,
Our first week back after the February break has gone very well. As of the end of day Thursday, there have only been eight verified student cases of COVID and one staff case. We will continue to test at all school sites and carefully monitor cases as we gradually begin to normalize school operations. Monday’s Special Community Update stated that after March 11, the California Department of Public Health is no longer mandating indoor masks in schools or childcare facilities, although they strongly recommend that all individuals wear masks in those settings. Alameda County Public Health Department announced yesterday that they are aligning with the state’s move.
For those who want the bottom line, the only change that Albany Unified is making right now is that outdoor masking will not be required after this week. Beginning March 7, 2022, outdoor masking at AUSD schools will be optional. All schools will be supportive of either option, and I expect that masked and unmasked individuals will respectfully co-exist this spring. At the March 8 Board of Education meeting, there will be a staff report and discussion regarding COVID updates and indoor mask requirements.

- March is Music In Our Schools Month! The theme is Music—The Sound of My Heart. AUSD is celebrating with a month’s long series of band and choir concerts, listed here. All are welcome to enjoy these superb performances through live streams or recorded videos at Albany Music Fund Facebook Live!
- Something Rotten, a musical adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, will be performed live at the Albany High Little Theater on March 10–12! Get tickets here, and be prepared to show proof of vaccination at the door.
- March 8 is International Women’s Day. The Asian-Pacific Islander Parent Engagement Group will host a conversation with award-winning filmmaker Karen Lin, on Sunday, March 13 at 3:00 pm about the themes reflected in her short film Perfection. The 6-minute film reflects on how an Asian American woman learns the game of perfection, and raises the question: will the game ever end?

Nuestra primera semana de regreso después de las vacaciones de febrero ha ido muy bien. Hasta el final del día jueves, solo ha habido ocho casos estudiantiles verificados de COVID y un caso del personal. Continuaremos realizando pruebas en todos los sitios escolares y monitorearemos cuidadosamente los casos a medida que comencemos gradualmente a normalizar las operaciones escolares.
