Steady On, COVID-19 Case Dashboard, New Return To School Requirements
Dear Albany Community,
Albany schools have definitely been experiencing a surge of COVID cases, which have affected students as well as staff. As I stated last week, we are holding steady with our recommendation for KN95 or N95 masks for all students and staff. If you are unable to provide one, we have supplies available in each school office.
The good news is that it seems like we may be seeing a decrease in the number of cases reported. This is an early observation, every day brings new data and we never know if it will be up or down. Even if this observation reflects a real downturn, it will still take several weeks for school to return to the relatively familiar operation we had in October and November.
COVID-19 Case Dashboard
AUSD has maintained a COVID-19 Case Dashboard, reporting staff and student cases daily. The difficulties of daily reporting are numerous. When a phone call or email comes into a school office about a COVID case, we begin an investigation. How was this case diagnosed and by whom? When did symptoms (if any) start? Getting these answers can take time, and because of the time needed to complete an investigation, many school districts report weekly. Despite the challenges, we remain committed to updating our COVID Case Dashboard daily.
New Return To School Requirements
When a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19 they must:
- Stay home and isolate for 10 days. Isolation may be limited to 5 days if certain conditions are met. The day of first symptoms, or a positive test if no symptoms, is considered day 0 and isolation must last a minimum of 5 full days. (For example, if symptoms start today (January 21), the earliest someone may attend classes is January 27.)
- If any fever is present, isolation should be continued until fever resolves completely.
- If symptoms, other than fever, are not resolving, continue to isolate until symptoms are resolving or until after day 10.
- If unable to test or choosing not to test, and symptoms are not present or are resolving, isolation can end after day 10.
- Isolation may only end after day 5 if no fever is present, other symptoms are not present or are resolving and a diagnostic test collected on day 5 or later is negative. Rapid testing at school is preferred before a student returns to school.
Contact your school’s COVID liaison for more information, and remember that students with any possible symptoms must stay home from school. These requirements reflect new guidance first issued by the CDC, then adopted by both the State of California and the Alameda Public Health Department.
Vaccine Mandate Activates Next Week For 5–11 Year Olds
The AUSD vaccination mandate will activate next Wednesday, January 26 for students 5 to 11 years old. Please get your vaccination documentation or consent for your student to be tested weekly submitted. See this webpage for instructions. Vaccination continues to be the best way to stay safe during the pandemic.
