This week, senior scholar athletes Casey Brown and Maggie Paulovich signed their official commitment letters to Cal Berkeley (Ms. Brown, gymnastics) and Cal State University Fullerton (Ms. Paulovich, softball) at a signing celebration held at Albany High. To achieve a sports scholarship to a Division 1 college is the result of countless hours of dedicated practice, remarkable persistence, and an incredibly high level of skills mastery. These nationally ranked young women are truly elite athletes and scholars. Please join me in wishing them the very best in all future endeavors. Go Casey! Go Maggie!
Travel Recommendations
Albany schools are seeing some isolated cases of COVID-19 since returning from Thanksgiving break. Thankfully, the safety measures in place at each school site have kept us from having any school-based outbreaks, and all of us: students, parents, and staff, must continue to be vigilant. We all know that the pandemic is not over, and I ask each of you to do your part to keep our students and staff safe. Please follow these Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for Domestic Travel and International Travel. If your family includes a student who will need to quarantine after travel, contact your school’s main office right away to set up short-term independent study. And for your safety and others, please get your vaccination and booster shot. The FDA just today lowered the eligible age for receiving a booster shot to 16 year olds. AUSD stands with the CDC, encouraging everyone 16 and older to receive a booster shot, as soon as you pass the six-month mark after receiving your second shot.
Albany Schools Have A COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate
Albany schools have a vaccination mandate for students that will activate on January 3, 2022 for those 12 and older, and January 26, 2022 for those ages 5 to 11. Students who don’t have their vaccination documentation submitted by these dates will need to be COVID-tested weekly at school. This includes students who are:
- medically exempt;
- those not vaccinated for any reason;
- those in the process of being vaccinated; and
- those who haven’t submitted vaccine documentation.
If AUSD does not have your consent for doing a weekly nasal swab COVID test, then your student will be moved to long-term Independent Study until vaccination documentation or testing consent is obtained, or until the end of the school year.
Submitting Documentation
Parents and guardians of students ages 5 to 11 were asked for the first time this week to send in vaccination documentation (submit when student has received both shots). If you have a student aged 5 to 11, check your inbox for an email with the subject line: "IMPORTANT: Student Vaccination Status" linking to a form from our trusted partner, InformedK12. Submitting the individualized form will update your student’s confidential immunization record. Noting that your student will not be vaccinated (perhaps for medical reasons) is an optional response, and AUSD needs to receive that information.
Outreach continues to the parents and guardians of older students who are receiving text messages, emails, and letters through the US Mail to get their vaccination documentation or testing consent submitted before the January 3 deadline.
Next Week Is The Last Week of School Before Winter Break
Winter Break runs December 20–31 this year and next week is the last week of classes for 2021. High school students will be taking finals Dec. 14–17 on a special finals schedule. Next week, you can also look for a brief Update from me, and I will begin now to wish you a wonderful, relaxing Winter Break!
