Halloween Parades and Vaccine News
Dear Albany Community,
It was such a joy to see our young students parading in their Halloween costumes with the community cheering them on. The creativity of the costumes was amazing! These simple pleasures are sweet after their long absence. Please be safe over the Halloween weekend and take note of Alameda County Department of Public Health’s recommendations for celebrating.
Vaccinations for Children Five to Eleven Years Old
On Tuesday, an FDA advisory panel recommended Emergency Use Authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 years old. Although there are several additional steps before vaccinations in this age group actually begin, it could happen as early as next week. Mass vaccination sites will not be reopened, instead parents are encouraged to take their children to their primary healthcare provider, or any pharmacy, to receive the vaccine. We are diligently pursuing vaccination clinics, and I will provide more information on local vaccination options when it becomes available. Having a COVID vaccine available for younger students is a turning point for our schools.
AUSD Student Vaccination Mandate
At Tuesday’s Board meeting, the Board of Education unanimously approved a student COVID vaccination and testing mandate that bridges the gap between now and the vaccination mandate signed by Governor Newsom. The state requirement for students to be vaccinated against COVID-19 will take effect the semester following full (not emergency) FDA approval of COVID-19 vaccinations for each age group. If that full approval is granted next spring for children ages 12 and older, then students in that age group will be required to have proof of vaccination on file with the District before the start of the next school year.
However, AUSD will require proof of vaccination by January 3, 2022 for students 12 years old and older. Parents of younger children, who are expected to become age-eligible shortly, will have twelve weeks to get them vaccinated and submit proof of vaccination to the District. Students who are unvaccinated, medically exempt from vaccination, or for whom the District has no documentation, will need to be PCR-tested for COVID-19 at school weekly in order to continue in-person instruction.
Many have already sent in vaccination status documentation for their AMS and AHS student(s). Now is a great time to take care of it, if you haven’t gotten around to it. Search your email for “Student Vaccination Status” to find an email individualized for each student from our trusted partner InformedK12. We will be sending out another email today to all that have not previously responded. If your student is in the 5–11 year old age group, watch for news about vaccination options. This weekly update will keep you informed about how and when to submit younger student’s vaccine verification documents.
Thanksgiving Travel
Even if your youngster is one of the very first to receive a vaccination, they will not be eligible to receive the second shot until just before Thanksgiving and won’t be considered fully protected until early December. The CDC recommends that travelers who are not fully vaccinated self-quarantine for 7 days with a negative test result or 10 days with self-monitoring for symptoms and no test. If your family falls into this group, please contact your school’s main office ahead of your travel to set up short-term independent study for the quarantine time.

Mandato de vacunación estudiantil de AUSD
