Dear Albany Community,
We’ve had another week with no reported cases of COVID-19 among staff or students, bringing us to eighteen straight days! No classes are in quarantine at this time. Last week I said that we need to continue to be vigilant, and that we need to plan for the future. That means looking at how vaccinations will be addressed now and in future years.
Student Vaccine Mandate News Across the State
Some school districts in California have already enacted student COVID-19 vaccination mandates to bridge the time until the Governor’s mandate takes effect (probably next fall for students twelve and older). Other school boards are passing resolutions in opposition to the Governor’s mandate. You may hear on the news about activities planned to protest adding COVID-19 to the list of required vaccinations for students. I understand that this is an issue that has inflamed our nation, and that many have strong emotions and questions about COVID-19 safety measures, including vaccine and testing requirements.
This is what I know: schools are good for kids. Coming to school regularly has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in preschool and continuing through high school. From providing free regular meals, safe spaces, emotional and mental health supports, trusted adults, and interaction with peers, the importance of ensuring regular attendance can't be overstated. I hope we can all agree that keeping our schools safe and open is what's best for our students. I support our Board’s efforts to ensure that students can come to school regularly, without the disruptions caused by COVID illness or quarantines.
AUSD Student COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate
The Albany Board of Education discussed a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for students at their meeting on Tuesday. A draft policy and administrative regulation will come back to the Board at their October 26 meeting, and they may take action on it then. The proposed language, which of course could be changed, states that the District will require proof of vaccination by January 3, 2022 for students who are age-eligible now. When younger children become age-eligible, parents will have twelve weeks to get them vaccinated and submit proof of vaccination to the District. Students who are medically exempt, or for whom the District has no documentation, will need to be PCR-tested weekly to remain at school for in-person instruction.
I hope that as a school community, we can continue to work as a team to keep classrooms open. Indications are strong that COVID-19 vaccinations may be approved and available as early as next month for children five to eleven years old. With the possibility of having most of our students vaccinated before the new year, we can greatly increase safety at school.

Mandato de vacunación COVID-19 para estudiantes de AUSD
La Junta de Educación de Albany discutió un mandato de vacunación contra COVID-19 para los estudiantes en su reunión del martes. Un borrador de política y reglamento administrativo será enviado a la Junta en su reunión del 26 de octubre , y pueden tomar acción al respecto en ese momento. El lenguaje propuesto, que por supuesto podría cambiarse, establece que el Distrito requerirá un comprobante de vacunación antes del 3 de enero de 2022 para los estudiantes que ahora son elegibles por edad. Cuando los niños más pequeños sean elegibles por edad, los padres tendrán doce semanas para vacunarlos y presentar prueba de vacunación al Distrito. AUSD 学生 COVID-19 疫苗接种任务
