Dear Albany Community,
Albany students remained busy learning this week, exactly as it should be. Adherence to safety protocols, vaccination, and surveillance testing are reasons that I am able to say this has been a blessedly uneventful week. About 1740 students are participating in our COVID surveillance pooled testing program. Results from more than 280 pools (usually corresponding to classrooms) have been received so far, and none have come back positive for COVID-19. Weekly student pooled testing will continue. Fewer than 15 staff members, out of about 500, have not been fully vaccinated, and those few are being tested weekly as part of the state’s mandatory testing program.
Making the COVID Vaccination Mandatory for Students
Today Governor Newsom announced a mandate requiring California students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. This mandate will take effect for students twelve and older at the beginning of the school term following the FDA’s full approval of the vaccine (not the current emergency approval). Mandates for younger students would be phased in after formal FDA approval of vaccines for that age group. The Governor’s mandate specifies that unvaccinated students will not be allowed to attend school in-person, as is the case with other required childhood immunizations. Medical and religious exemptions will be available.
The AUSD Board of Education discussed making COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for students at the September 28 board meeting. It’s possible that our local policy might differ from the state’s in some ways, such as when such a policy should take effect, and what educational options should be available for students who remain unvaccinated. AUSD will, of course, adhere to state law, but local policy could go into effect sooner, or allow fewer exceptions, for example. This will be discussed again at the next regular Board of Education meeting on October 12. Please join the meeting to learn more or if you would like to comment.
Board Meetings Remain Online for October
The Board of Education determined that they will continue to meet via an online teleconference (Zoom) for the time being. We hope that we will be able to resume in-person meetings soon.
Openings on the Student Achievement Committee
Openings for interested parents and staff remain on the Student Achievement Committee! This new group was conceived last year as the Superintendent’s Student Achievement Task Force and has evolved into a Board-appointed committee. The group will meet monthly and will delve deeply into challenges facing the achievement of students. Please visit the link above to find out more and to submit your application.
COVID Funding Survey
Albany schools have received significant funding from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) program. Please look for a survey in your inboxes early next week to provide your input and help the District prioritize needs.
