Dear Albany Community,
When the pandemic locked us all down, the basics of educating our students became a challenge. Since that time, AUSD has gradually opened back up, and now we have almost all students back at our schools, and a small group of medically vulnerable students in a special long-term Independent Study Program. We have come a long way, but our schools are not back to normal. We are still in a pandemic, COVID surveillance testing has become part of a normal school day, and many students are not yet eligible for vaccinations. There are other repercussions of returning that I have observed. Our children spent well over a year at home, and a regular school day can be exhausting. It is not overstating to say that all of us, children and parents alike, have anxieties and sadness we did not carry before. At the same time, we know how happy students and staff are to be back at school in person.
Field Trips Suspended for TK/K–6th Grades
Our district is headed in the right direction, but some things still need to wait before they can again become part of the school day. I believe in the educational value of field trips, but now is not the time to launch off-campus adventures for younger students. For these reasons, I have suspended field trips for our youngest learners in TK/Kindergarten through sixth grade. When pandemic conditions change, and when students and staff have had time to fully readjust, I will be happy to revisit this decision.
Voluntary Request for Student’s Vaccination Status
Parents of AMS and AHS/Mac students have been sent a personalized email from the District titled “Student Vaccination Status.” This email was sent by AUSD and utilizes a form from our trusted partner for confidential information, InformedK12. Please respond to the information request about your student's vaccination status as soon as possible. Having this information is critical to our efforts to keep our schools safe. Currently we have received responses from just over 70% of students.
Pooled Testing Update
Pooled testing is happening weekly at all school sites. To date, 197 pools have been tested, and no positive results have been reported. It takes a few days for results to be reported and, in general, the elementary school principals will be reporting on negative results to set your mind at ease. If a pooled test is positive, you will be notified immediately.
Testing During Modified Quarantine
Modified Quarantine allows unvaccinated students to continue attending school in-person during their quarantine period if they are tested for COVID-19 twice a week. Our new school nurses are administering this required testing at school for those students, which can be a combination of pooled testing (which has its own consent form) and rapid tests or PCR tests. I encourage all families to sign up for free, easy testing at school. Please watch for a general COVID testing consent form coming from your school principal next week, which will cover any rapid or PCR tests that are needed to complete modified quarantine requirements.
The good news is that out of the approximately twenty classrooms placed on Modified Quarantine since the beginning of the school year, in only three of those classes has another positive case turned up that might possibly be linked to the first case. We believe that this is a strong indicator that the safety protocols that are in place (ventilation, masks, etc.) have kept the infection from spreading. Our schools and you, our parent/guardian community, have been successful at limiting the spread of COVID-19 by adhering to safety guidelines and impressing students with their importance.
