Dear Albany Community,
It has been a busy week! There have been additional COVID-19 cases identified within our schools, and our highest priority has been dealing with those in the way that keeps staff and students safe. We are continuing to enforce our safety protocols, have increased testing capacity at school sites, and are launching test result reporting procedures for those using their own medical provider.
Clearer Guidance, Verified Testing
All of us have become increasingly familiar with terms such as isolation, quarantine, PCR, antigens, and swabbing, but there is no doubt that COVID-19 guidance has been changeable and complex. There are three types of quarantine available to students in different circumstances, and other options available to staff members. If your student experiences a possible exposure at school, you will quickly receive an exposure letter and information detailing what type of quarantine and testing will be required. The new AUSD Requirements for Returning to School covers multiple scenarios. For an additional resource, the newly updated flowchart from the Alameda County Office of Education may be helpful.
If your student is in an affected class, and the class is eligible for modified quarantine, it means that District and County officials agreed that asymptomatic students can continue to attend school in-person. Twice-weekly testing is required for those students, and will be offered at school. If you select to have the testing done by a medical professional elsewhere, you will be directed on how to share those results with the school. A free, local option for PCR testing is Test the People.
Pooled Surveillance Testing Reveals Invisible Infections
In order to be proactive instead of reactive, we are instituting weekly surveillance testing at all schools. Please find out more and sign up here. Student’s self-administered tests will be combined, “pooled”, and then processed. If any pool comes back with a positive COVID result, then every student in the pool will be offered a rapid test at school. If a classroom is on modified quarantine, pooled testing will satisfy one of the twice-weekly required tests (only students with a consent form on file can be tested). All of this testing and the processing of paperwork requires dedicated staff. I have brought on additional medically trained personnel and have assigned Executive Director of Student Services, Alexia Ritchie, to focus exclusively on COVID safety.
Lastly, I want to encourage you to take heart. Health officials predict that vaccinations for young children will become available this year, and that will make a tremendous difference. The cases we are seeing in Albany are disturbing to all of us, and each case concerns me greatly. Once I have done everything in my power to assist in making our classrooms as safe as possible, I spend a moment reflecting with joy on all of the reconnecting and learning that has been happening, both at home through Independent Study, and in our in-person classrooms.
In other good news, elementary schools just had their online Back to School Nights yesterday, and I hope that elementary parents and guardians enjoyed meeting their student’s teachers.
