First Week Accomplished, Pooled Testing, Air Quality, Aeries, and ParentSquare
Dear Albany Community,
There were a few bumps and hiccups, but students had a tremendous first week back in school! As I visited all of the schools on the first day of class, I saw excited, enthusiastic students and teachers ready to get the school year started.
Masking, Vaccines, and Testing
Students and staff are required to wear masks indoors and outdoors, and we are blessed here in Albany that our school communities are highly cooperative on this point. Even our preschoolers are wearing masks properly and diligently, all day long. The other top safety measure is to get a free COVID vaccine if you are at least twelve years old and eligible. See this webpage for more information and locations. By California law, all educational staff are required to be vaccinated or to have weekly COVID tests. We are implementing this now and you will be updated.
AUSD is also offering free COVID testing for students every week. Tests are not recommended for those who have been fully vaccinated. Students will be tested in pools, usually corresponding to classrooms at the elementary level. Follow-up testing will allow cases to be managed and outbreaks avoided. Testing is our best tool for keeping classrooms open, and I urge you to please read and complete the consent form now, as your informed consent is required. Please see this webpage for more information and links to the consent form. Testing is planned to start on August 31 for Cornell and Ocean View. Marin, AMS, and AHS are scheduled to have their first round of testing on September 2. More detailed information about follow-up procedures and notification will be forthcoming.
Air Quality
Albany has begun to experience moderate levels of smoke, in addition to COVID concerns. However, we are planning for how this contingency will be handled. The AMS Annex (Marin West), the AHS Addition (Marin East), and Ocean View all have new, top-quality HVAC systems. The ventilation systems at our older schools have been significantly improved and supplemented with filters and fans. Still, the conflicting needs of bringing in lots of fresh air for COVID safety, and keeping smoky air out of classrooms, are difficult to resolve. I will be consulting with experts as we plan, and I expect to communicate District guidelines to you in the near future.
Aeries and ParentSquare
Many of you received a surprise invitation to ParentSquare, the Aeries Communication System, earlier this week, as a way to see your student’s classroom assignment. We had intended to roll ParentSquare out in September, after the rush of getting back to school had settled down. However, a troublesome software glitch in Aeries was persistently keeping parents from being able to complete the annual family data confirmation, a prerequisite to seeing class assignments. The problem has been resolved and all parents/guardians will need to complete Aeries data confirmation by August 31, 2021. We understand that it was extremely frustrating not to see your student’s classroom assignments until the day before (or even the day) that school started. I am making a commitment to you that next year will be smoother. There may be some remaining issues regarding student email accounts, which are necessary to access Google Classroom, and resolving these is a top priority.
Now that ParentSquare has launched, and over 63% of elementary parents have already registered, let me tell you a little bit about it. It was developed in Santa Barbara by two parents who were software engineers and could clearly see the need for better school-to-home communication. It has been adopted by most districts that use Aeries as their student information system. You do not have to register to continue to receive all school communications. If you choose to register, you will be able to set preferences for the language you would like to receive messages in, whether you want texts or emails, and when you want to receive non-emergency messages.
The ParentSquare dashboard will also collect all of the school communications you receive in one place, and will connect you to some Aeries student information. For people who prefer to use their phones rather than a computer, the free apps (both Android and Apple) are user-friendly. Note that AUSD is transitioning to ParentSquare, and we are not yet using all features. Specifically, a few teachers will be piloting it, but most teachers will not be using it this semester as there has not been adequate time for evaluation and training.
