A Message from Principal Georgeson Move to OVE

February 13, 2020

Dear Ocean View Families, the last day of instruction at Ocean View on Jackson Street is this Friday, February 14th. And, after the Mid-Winter Break starting on February 24th we will be located in the new wing at Albany High School or as we call it Ocean View East. We thank the entire Albany High School community for being so welcoming to our otter students and teaching community and look forward to our new relationship with the high school.

The following is some basic information parents may find helpful as you plan for this transition.

New Address starting February 24, 2020: 1311 Portland Ave. Albany CA. 94706

Drop Off and Pick Up is on Portland Ave near the Albany Aquatic Center and the new portables using the walkway between the aquatic center and Memorial Park. Please use the (north) side of the street facing west for drop off.  Please avoid dropping students off where they may have to cross traffic.  Travel from Ramona or Carmel Ave on to Portland this will provide you with the safest drop off and pick up for your child.

FAQ's:

How long will Ocean View be in temp housing?  Our school will be on two campuses through the Spring of 2021 and return to our new building on Jackson Street in the fall of 2021. During temporary housing, our 3rd,4th, and 5th grade will be located on the Ocean View East campus at Albany Hight School at and our 1st and 2nd grade is located at the AMS Annex. The kindergarten is with both Cornell and Marin Schools during this time of temp housing.

Where will students eat lunch?  OV East students will eat lunch at their regular time, 11:55 - 12:40 pm in the AHS Multi-Purpose room.

Will students still have library, PE and music? The school day at our OV East campus will continue to offer all current programs including PE, library, music and scheduled field trips.

Where will students play during PE and recess? Play is important for all children. The Ocean View teachers are committed to offering students a recess that is a safe and secure place to play. We have created a playground as part of our campus separate from Albany High School. This offers the opportunity for students to have PE, and play games such as tetherball, basketball, 4-square and handball. In addition, the grassy area of the baseball field to the west of our playground and the north tennis court will be open for all recesses and offer PE other options for field games and play with coordination of AHS.

However, we are taking a more thoughtful approach to the use of the Memorial Park play structure. The play structure on Memorial Park is a public park and open to the public at all times during the day. This poses a challenge for supervision and safety. I am confident that once we have moved in and can see how the park is used we will create safe opportunities for students to play on the structure at Memorial park.

Can our students swim at the Aquatic Center pool? The pool serves both the public and the AUSD community and as part of our plan for next year, we look to create opportunities for students to experience the joy of swimming at the Aquatic Pool.

Will we have our regularly scheduled school and community events while in temporary housing? Here is the schedule for our school and community events for the remainder of this year.
