PARENT EDUCATION NIGHT AT MARIN--JANUARY 17TH (7:00-8:30PM) Are we really born racist?: How we can come together to talk to our children about discrimination and inequality. Based on insights from my co-edited book “Are We Born Racist”? and three decades of work on discrimination, I hope to engage fellow parents in a conversation about race, discrimination, and inequality in our schools. These conversations can be difficult to have with each other and with our children as well. In the first part of the talk, I will cover the latest research on implicit bias and stereotype threat, and review a developmental literature to answer the question of whether we are in fact born with a penchant to discriminate against others. The second half of the talk will be a workshop-style discussion where we gain insight into how to talk to our children around racism and other -isms, and what we can do as a community to address these issues.” --AUSD parent Dr. Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, Richard & Rhoda Goldman Professor, Department of Psychology, Assoc.Dean, Diversity and Inclusion, College of Letters & Science.
